Indulge in Nostalgic Comforts | Fall 2024

We adore fall – and inspiration is everywhere! Every year we can depend on the timeless landscape of Boston Common to show off an outstanding array of color starting the month of September with the arrival of the Autumn Solstice.

And chic autumn-style isn’t just for the clothes in your closet, although we do love ourselves a cozy sweater to stroll the streets of Back Bay or Beacon Hill on a cool, sun-shiny day. It can’t help but make us nostalgic for all the season is about to bring; memories of falling leaves, the smell of wood tinder, and chilled air wafting over our cheeks.

CUE THE NOSTALGIA

Speaking of nostalgic and stylish comforts, we’re not the only ones feeling sentimental this time of year. The heritage brand J Crew relaunched it’s iconic catalog after a seven year hiatus on the shelf. As many fan-followers can attest, it served as an enduring reminder of the transitional beauty between seasons with photography capturing backgrounds of brownstones, waterfront views, and cityscapes.

The revived edition features stunning coastal and outdoorsy sets with four distinct covers, one capturing Demi Moore in some of her own personal vintage pieces. Check out the interview and gallery of her favorite portrait picks for Fall 2024. You may even have some of these in your closet!

And we love how fall fashion isn’t limited to what we can wear. It can be anything from counter tops, couches and candles – to front doors, porches and ornamental trees.

FALL FASHION FOR HOMES

Style is an ever-evolving visual element that we alter through our own unique choices to create something organically pleasing to us. Something that speaks to what we feel that brings some beauty into the world around us in our own way. Even if it’s done with pumpkins, flowers, and paint mixes.

We may be slightly sad to see summer fade away (and what a gorgeous spring and summer it was) but as soon as those pumpkin spiced lattes hit your lips on a crisp fall morning, it doesn’t seem quite so bad.

PUMPKIN SPICE SEASON

This homemade pumpkin spice latte by Love & Lemons rivals any coffee shop version we’ve tried. It’s creamy, warmly spiced, and naturally sweetened with maple syrup. Yes please!

Along with spiced lattes, the fresh, fall-weather becomes a time celebrate the autumn season with all types of interior design ideas. When the leaves start to change color, so does our décor; festive wreaths adorn front doors, stairs become lined with pumpkins, aromatic candles and floral arrangements  placed on the center island, cozy blankets, pillows and bedspreads come out from hiding, and kitchens fill with the captured scents of cranberry, sweet clove, baked apple or any other fall flavor you crave.

AUTUMN GREEN’S SOOTHING VERSATILITY

This gorgeous green kitchen by Boston Interior Designer Jamie Keskin is stunning and dramatic – and offers a perfect transition from spring and summer to fall. We are drawn to her approach to home style of, “Where the unexpected is to be expected and comfort takes priority.” She re-imagines homes throughout New England to invite happiness, comfort & conversation in. What a wonderful way to set the living stage for your home.

Another dreamy interior design that’s so versatile for any time of the year but makes an outstanding fall and holiday setting by Jamie Keskin is this modern lodge with a rustic wood beam mantel, lofted ceiling and the perfect combination of wood, stone and sophistication. Staged with warm tones of gold, brown, and amber to offset the gray, blue and ivory tones. Change the leaf centerpiece to pumpkins or a spray of evergreen and add a wreath or garland and you’ve transformed this into a holiday time oasis.

One more look we really love for fall interior design inspiration is this gorgeous green and wood library bar with strategic artwork placed over exquisitely paneled walls with mill work, glowing lights and lush foliage. Any home or office could use this style to recreate a fresh, green, natural environment to spend many happy hours of the day.

It’s easy and can be cost effective to add a touch of green with a fresh bouquet of flowers, a centerpiece or just a handful of foliage sprigs. If it’s something you’ve always wanted to learn how to do, take a class this fall in Succulent Centerpiece Making or a Fall Floral Centerpiece Workshop to hone your skills and DIY a bouquet anytime on the fly.

HOLIDAY COMFORTS

Holiday decorating doesn’t need to be elaborate or take a lot of time in your already too-busy schedule. Pickup a variety of colors and sizes of pumpkins or cute little gourds and line them up on a mantel or shelf with whatever is already there. This fun and simple display below mixed in black and white makes a perfect accent for fall – as well as Halloween.

For an easy touch for the Front Door, simply hang some black felt bats and spider web string around your fall pumpkins and viola! A Halloween hello for anyone that walks up your front steps.

Try a fuzzy pumpkin! Fuzzy pumpkins can be used in a variety of ways to decorate for fall and Halloween, including; adding to a centerpiece, placing in a bowl, displaying on a coffee table or used as a Thanksgiving centerpiece. Add one to a bookshelf to add a pop of color. Group them with other colors and textures, smooth and dimpled, to great a super fun – and soft – look! They are great partners to pair with other decor. Try them with a vintage metal wagon, metallic vases or candle holders, woven baskets and fluffy ornamental grass. There’s something so sweet and inviting, just perfect for fall!

We love the latest gallery of trinkets below from Potterybarn, West Elm, Anthropologie and Terrain – and each has a fantastic, interactive holiday guide to help you shop everything you desire in one easy place!

Prefer a more eclectic array of ornamental Halloween details than the standard bats, witches, and skeletons? Mix in some Dia De Los Muertos sugar skulls and extend your decor through the festive Day of the Dead celebrations that go through November 1st – 2nd. If you want to make your own, there are so many workshops around Greater Boston, like this Sugar Skull Workshop hosted by Art for All in Concord, MA on October 23rd.

WELCOMING ADORNMENTS

It’s amazing how just hanging a wreath on your door can send a welcoming message to any guests arriving at your door, and even your own family. Seasonal changes as simple as colorful dried flowers or evergreen sprigs can signal that it’s time to celebrate and that your ready for the arrival of anyone that rings your doorbell.

We think the best part about decorating is sharing the results of your welcoming space with loved ones to spread around the good vibes – and to reward yourself for all of the time and effort that goes into a perfectly planned hospitality setting. Once the last detail is done, what better way to enjoy your accomplishments then to invite friends for a spread of good wine, aged cheese and tasty cornichons. Try a class with Boards By Mo soon to be BordeuxBos to become a pro at crafting your own charcuterie boards and fill your entire kitchen island with an edible display. Everyone always spends the entire time in the kitchen, so why not set it up as the ideal buffet of finger size-nibbles to share over great conversation.

Pair a delightful autumn libation with your tasty spread for a perfect pairing. Check out Boston Common’s cocktail list of fall recipes for 2024! Get cozy with a delicious drink and toast the spectacular season in style. Next time you put on your favorite sweater, enjoy an evening by the fire paired with one of the cozy autumn cocktails.

We love garland! It’s full, festive, and a simple way to joyfully embrace the natural beauty of New England inside your home… and out. Displays can be big or small depending on personal preference and you can put evergreen garland anywhere – stair railings, mantles, a door or door frame, a table centerpiece and take any extra and make another wreath to hang on a hook in the hallway, inside or bathroom door. Plus, real evergreens smell so amazing!

Here are some creative ideas from Magnolia on ‘how to’ decorate with garland in your home. Beyond traditional styling, they’re re-imagining this classic greenery to where and how it can be placed. After all, garland can help highlight unique parts of your house that may not see much decor during the rest of the year.

Cedar Evergreen 60′ Garland via Nearly Naturals

Welcome a tiny evergreen village to your home with a spattering of straw-wire pine trees in a variety of colors or even bedazzled with metallic and sparkles. Mix in ceramic shops, houses, churches and even vintage miniature cars. Or set up an evergreen haven right when you walk into the house in a foyer or mudroom. A little greenery can spruce up the space and also make any leaves brought in from outside, look like they’re in good company.

Evergreen accents are so easy, it’s a bit surprising how a tiny spring of spruce or a pine cone picked from the yard can add such a lovely touch of elegance. Take some snippets from your favorite tree and fill a bowl with various sized pine cones and create a lovely tablescape for a festive dinner. The greenery will scent the room perfectly for the event, and you can even spread around some whole walnuts and string lights to finish the look. The earthy textures pair perfectly with shiny metals and glass – and even better, looks it’s best when displayed with white linens, plates, and candles.

We’ll close our fall roundup of cozy, indulgent ideas for you to try with a sweet and savory dessert that will warm your heart – along with two checklists to help plan the coming months to ease your stress and make it the best it can be for both guests, family, friends and you!
